El Nicho FallsCovered up in lush green jungle the crystal-clear river runs by the footpath and forms the odd swimming hole to cool down in. The path joins the river where two impressive waterfalls show their strength and invite you in for a refreshing swim. You are at El Nicho waterfalls in the outskirts of Topes de Collantes National Park in Cuba. A favorite day trip from Cienfuegos both for Cubans and tourists.This was my first and only waterfall I was able to experience and photograph during my multiple visits to Cienfuegos. I was contracted as a photographer for Azamara Cruises and had the opportunity to visit all three major ports of Cuba. Azamara would provide shore excursions with local tour guides for the guests to visit exclusive locations in each port. As a ranked crew member I would have the opportunity to join one or two shore excursions each cruise as a guest resource while also making sure everyone is accounted for when returning. Little did I know we would intentionally be leaving a wife and husband behind...As we were making the hike back to the trailhead I was casually talking to a guest when we unexpectedly heard a woman's hair raising scream followed by "it's broken" from behind us. I reacted immediately and headed towards her direction about 40-50 yards behind us. I arrived to 5-6 people all surrounding this lady who was a guest on on our ship and appeared to have slipped down 2ft drop off. When I approached she told me that she was a retired nurse and knew it was broken. Our first mission was to help here get out of the forrest and to a vehicle so we could transport her to get medical attention. Myself and three other guests alternated helping her use her one good leg over narrow bridges and steep inclines for almost a mile.Eventually we made it and they took her to the nearest medical facility where she was deemed to need emergency surgery. Unfortunately the ship was set to sail at 8pm that evening and she was required to stay for a certain amount of days after having surgery before she could return to the United States. So unfortunately we had no choice but to leave her and husband behind.One of the craziest experiences I have ever had on a waterfall hike to this day.PEACE OF MIND:
