On Friday, May 10th, I embarked on a journey from Hermitage, starting on Lebanon Rd to Highway 109 North, and eventually cutting through to 31 NE, finding myself in the quaint locality of Angeltown, Tennessee. Armed with my camera and a keen sense of adventure, I was on a quest to capture one of nature's most elusive and spectacular phenomena—the Aurora Borealis.The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, is typically visible in polar regions, but every so often, geomagnetic storms extend their visibility further south. Given the intensity of the geomagnetic storm, which could have been ranked G4 or even G5 (on a scale where G5 represents extreme geomagnetic conditions), the aurora borealis was pushed much further south, allowing it to be visible from locations like Tennessee, which is a rare occurrence. The peak time between 10 PM and 1 AM would have been when these effects were most noticeable, coinciding with the darkest hours and optimal viewing conditions.To track these celestial displays, I used a forecasting app called Aurora. The app uses a color-coded system on a map to indicate the likelihood of seeing the aurora at various locations. Green areas on the map indicate a higher chance of visibility, while gray areas suggest lower chances. At that time, the map showed I was just outside of the green zone, in a gray area, implying that while the aurora might be visible, it would likely be faint.Despite the odds, the skies did not disappoint. Facing due north, my lens caught the magical dance of greens and pinks—a truly rare sight from this part of the world. In contrast, a turn to the south revealed violet hues that gracefully highlighted the faint outlines of the Milky Way.Though I couldn't see anything with my own eyes, I utilized a slower shutter speed on my camera to capture a long exposure. At 1:29 AM, the hidden beauty of the skies was revealed. Greens and pinks danced to the north, while the southern sky showcased violet hues outlining the Milky Way.
