One of these prospectors, Daniel Mooney, was particularly interested in the lands at the base of the waterfall that now bears his name. After multiple failed attempts, Mooney and his party returned in 1882 with the determination to find a way down.Despite their efforts, Mooney's plan to rappel down the falls using a rope proved to be a fatal mistake. The sharp rock columns caused the rope to fray, and Mooney fell to his death. It wasn't until a local Indian showed his friends a tunnel and steep "trail" that led to the base of the falls, that they were able to successfully make their way down.
