Delta Lake Grand Teton National Park | Wyoming Wall Art | Mountains | Canvas Prints | Metal Prints | Photography | Home Office Decor

from $92.00

Delta Lake is one of the most incredibly beautiful places I’ve ever hiked to, and getting there was an adventure I’ll never forget.

We started from the trailhead around 12:45 p.m. The hike was 8.2 miles round trip, 4.1 miles in and 4.1 back, with about 2,400 feet of elevation gain. The distance alone doesn’t tell you how difficult it was. There were steep climbs and switchbacks, and I was carrying 28 pounds of camera gear up to just under 9,000 feet.

On the way up, a park ranger and several hikers mentioned a bear ahead that looked brown. They told us to have our bear spray ready. Fortunately, we never saw it.

The final stretch took us off the maintained trail and into boulder fields. We scrambled over large rocks, worked around deep gaps between them, and climbed a steep dirt incline where we grabbed trees to help pull ourselves up. My friend found that section frightening, especially with the steepness and the thought of falling. I was exhilarated. I love that kind of adventure, and I was so excited to see what was waiting at the top.

Reaching the lake is a moment I’ll never forget. It was one of my first experiences at an alpine lake like this, and we had the whole place to ourselves.

When you’re up at that elevation, you expect some wind, and it was ripping in strong gusts. The water would start rippling, the wind would ease for a minute, but the surface never quite settled enough for the mirror reflection I wanted.

We spent roughly two to two and a half hours up there. I explored the area, photographed different angles, and worked out what I liked best for my shot. I left my tripod in the spot where I wanted to capture the reflection and kept an eye on the water as I moved around.

Then it finally calmed down. I ran back to the tripod and had maybe thirty seconds to capture the mountains reflected in the lake.

I got my photo, and I was like a little kid on Christmas.

We made it back down just before sunset at 7:20 p.m. With daylight fading, that earlier bear warning was still in the back of my mind. Other than a few deer and some distant elk bugling that sounded like the Nazgûl from The Lord of the Rings, we avoided any close wildlife encounters. Fortunately, we didn’t become dinner for anything.

The hike was worth every ache and pain that came the following day. It was an amazing adventure, and one I hope to experience again. If you’re visiting the Tetons, I’d give this hike a 10/10.
